Programme Objective
Information systems connect people, computers and technology with the aim of providing information optimally and enable communications between people. Whether social systems like Facebook or business systems like SAP - today, information systems play a decisive role in shaping our future!
Master’s studies in Digital Business Systems at our University, following undergraduate studies in computer science of business informatics, provide a valuable and targeted transfer of knowledge, offering highly qualified graduates a wide range of further professional and personal opportunities.
Teaching specialist skills
The central aspects of teaching specialist skills in the Information Systems programme are well balanced with the requirements of the current scientific debate, the social demands on computer science, the social aspects of digitalization and the practical needs of the corporate world. The starting point for this consecutive teaching offer is the successful completion of a preceding bachelor’s programme. The master’s programme qualification objective is the transfer of extended knowledge and skills in computer science and business informatics, which are useful for career opportunities. In this context, the programme is designed in a way that balances the disciplines of pure computer science and (applied) business informatics. Due to this, both bachelor’s students from the field of computer science and business informatics can deepen their specialist skills in their core area and expand them in the related area.
Teaching methodological skills, personality and social competences
The students’ personality is further developed in particular by the fact that the master’s increasingly demands independent and in-depth, reflective work. Students are supposed to become more independent, more critical and more creative. Furthermore, the high proportion of seminar-like courses promotes presentation and argumentation skills, which lead to the development of personal and social competences. The aim in this context is that students develop a specific understanding for social responsibility related to the development of digital systems. Special courses on ethics in computer science as well as fundamental seminars on social and leaderships skills underline this extension of competencies. A further focus will be on the development and promotion of methodological skills. As in the bachelor’s programmes, students are encouraged to solve problems as well as apply their skills to new unfamiliar situations.
Qualification for scientific work
Qualifying students for scientific work is a fundamental pillar of the master’s programme Information Systems. When designing all modules, care is taken to ensure that students make scientifically sound decisions. Students learn to define independent scientific goals for new application and research-oriented tasks in computer science and its related disciplines. The Science Seminar, which is specially designed to impart practical and theoretical skills in science, and the course Theories of Science create a broad foundation for this and promote the students’ scientific thinking. Finally, the master’s thesis is subject to a strict review process, which places particular emphasis on its scientific character.
Employability and lifelong learning
Graduates of this programme will have acquired competencies in all areas necessary for a future-oriented career (see above). Due to the increasing digitalization in all areas of life, a comprehensive understanding of information systems is of great importance. Our students will receive the subject-specific knowledge in order to meet requirements even in demanding positions of decision making. Due to the high degree of flexibility in the selection of different elective modules, a far-reaching specialisation is possible. In addition to the use in management-oriented professions, this also allows a specialist focus, which in turn does not limit the choice of occupational fields to management tasks alone (e.g. Industry 4.0, AI etc.)
Since in the future, in addition to automation technology and electromobility, the field of computer science will play a decisive role for social development as a basis as well as connecting discipline, it can be assumed that the labour market is not only currently optimal. In the years to come, the need for specialists in this field will rather increase and thus also the guaranteed necessity for lifelong learning. Through the knowledge imparted, graduates are able to continue this self-directed learning.
Programme accreditation
Due to the programme accreditation, which was carried out for the master’s programme, changed in the programme structure and designation of the master’s programme were necessary.
The re-designed master’s programme Information Systems is accredited since December 2008. In 2021, accreditation has been renewed successfully.
